Juan José Barboza-Gubo has an exhibit of sculpture and painting on display at the Hunter Gallery at St. George’s School. I haven’t made it down to see the show in person yet, but the prolific Peruvian-born artist’s work has been unavoidable in Providence for the past few years. (He won two consecutive RISCA fellowships, and then there was a Dorry-nominated show at AS220 Project Space, plus work at RIC and the Chazan Gallery…) Two motifs run through this show, whose Latin title translates roughly to “Blood-Battle-Slave”: deer (and man/deer hybrids) and the artist’s own blood.
