August Strindberg’s 1888 class tragedy Miss Julie leaps from stuffy Stockholm to present-day London, in playwright Polly Stenham’s new retelling of the story. Julie is a vapid party girl, Jean is her father’s Ghanaian chauffeur, and the mismatched duo have a brief yet devastating fling that ends very, very badly. The real reason to watch this National Theatre Live production is apparently the performance from Vanessa Kirby, whom you might recognize as Princess Margaret from The Crown. (As an aside, researching this blurb reminded me of the short-lived web cartoon Strindberg and Helium, in which the despondent playwright is followed around by a chipper balloon sidekick.)
