Marcel Schwob’s The King in the Golden Mask was first published in French in 1892, but you can celebrate the book’s quasquicentennial with its first full English translation. The book features twenty-one stories that, to quote the publisher, “swarm around moments of unexplained violence both historical and imaginary, often blending the two through Schwob’s collaging of primary source documents into fiction.” (Unrelatedly, Schwob was an uncle of Claude Cahun, the Jewish lesbian surrealist who fought off the Nazis from her island home.) Translator Kit Schluter will read from the book, while poet Alexis Almeida will read poetry.
