I haven’t seen Kubo and the Two Strings yet, but reviews have been overwhelmingly positive: “Staggeringly beautiful!” “2016’s First Animated Masterpiece!” “Visceral thrills and visual splendor!” Set in a Japanese fantasy world, the film tells the story of a one-eyed boy on a quest to recover magical armor left behind by his dead father, the greatest samurai the world had ever known. It’s the latest success for Laika, the powerhouse animation studio from Portland, Oregon. (Director/company CEO Travis Knight is the son of billionaire Nike founder Phil Knight.) The (mostly white) vocal talent includes Ralph Fiennes, Charlize Theron, and Brenda Vaccaro.
