Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut is a fast-moving race through the titular character’s senior year of high school, which coincided with the start of the 2003 Iraq war. College looms with promise for Lady Bird (Saorise Ronan) and dread for her financially overextended mother (Laurie Metcalf). There’s a best friend and a more popular friend and a couple of boys and a cute math teacher. It’s all very realistic and breezy, and quite relatable for those of us that were raised Catholic and applied to Sarah Lawrence during the Alanis Morissette/Dave Matthews era. I’m kind of surprised by the level of hype this is getting, though. The New York Film Critics Circle just named it the best movie of the year, and it’s currently the best reviewed movie of all time on film aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
Lady Bird is playing at Avon Cinema, Cinemaworld Lincoln, and Showcase Cinemas Warwick
