Trippy but listenable, Laser Background is the solo project of Philadelphia-based Speedy Ortiz guitarist Andy Molholt. The melodies are tight and the lyrics are vocals are processed to be largely indecipherable, like on “Hymnals,” a song that’s just begging for a kazoo solo, or the chiming, lovely “Drink The Dirt”. On the album Dark Nuclear Bogs – it’s an anagram of Laser Background – whirling organs and guitars tease at psychedelic spaciness while remaining firmly grounded in reality. Molholt plays with three local acts: Edgar Clinks, Leiko, and Devling (the newly renamed Math The Band).
It’s an early-ish show that I’m sure costs a few dollars, although how many dollars I can’t say because it doesn’t seem to be posted anywhere.
