My favorite book last summer was Gabe Habash’s Stephen Florida, a creepy college wrestling novel whose cover featured an illustration of a guilty-looking wildcat. This year, the most hotly-tipped book of the summer is a gothic short story collection that also has Florida in the title and a big cat on the cover. Coincidence?
Lauren Groff’s bestselling novel Fates and Furies got a National Book Award nomination and a thumbs up from President Obama, so hopes are high for Florida, her follow-up, which the New Yorker just called stunning. The reading is free, but Savoy Bookshop will donate a portion of each book sale to the Jonnycake Center, a Westerly-based food pantry and social service agency.
