Leah Carroll was four years old when mob goons murdered her mother in an Attleboro motel room. Fourteen years later, Carroll’s father also died in a hotel room, the seedy Sportsman’s Inn in downtown Providence. (That’s where the fancy Dean Hotel is now, if you’re new here.) For the memoir Down City, Carroll returned to Rhode Island to investigate the deaths of both her parents. (“Part true-crime story, part coming-of-age memoir,” Philip Eil wrote in Vice.) The book’s out on Tuesday, and the Brooklyn-based writer is back in town for a reading. New York has a sneak preview.
