Is this the week to watch a movie in which a predatory man and his patriarchy-upholding wife get hacked to death with a hatchet? Maybe! Chloë Sevigny spends most of Lizzie as if she’s trying not to throw up, and really who can blame her. The unmarried daughter of a creepy banker and a loveless stepmother, 32-year old Lizzie Borden is too old to be a debutante and too young to be a spinster. What’s a girl to do? The screenplay is odd and a little too long, but Sevigny is perfect, her droopy eyes and pale skin suggesting a woman exhausted with life – she’s seen too much – or maybe just a need to get out of Fall River once in a while.
