Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet Counter-Productions Theatre Company

Set in a map store with no customers to speak of, Steven Dietz’s Lonely Planet is a calm meditation on the AIDS crisis. First produced in 1994 – the height of the epidemic – the play is about store proprietor Jody (Jim O’Brien) and Carl (Christopher Plonka), a younger gay man who fills the store with unwanted old chairs – a nod to Ionesco – though he refuses to say what he does for a living. Jody sits in his empty store obsessing over different ways to see the (literal) world, though he’s clearly afraid to step outside himself. In the wrong hands this play could turn sappy, but two excellent performances elevate the latest from Counter-Productions Theatre Company.
