It’s taken seven years for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera sequel to play in the United States, which is funny because this one’s about the Phantom (Gardar Thor Cortes) packing his bags and moving to Coney Island circa 1907. Coincidentally the opera singer Christine (Meghan Picerno) is also in New York, to work for Oscar Hammerstein himself. Reviews suggest the story’s nothing to write home about, though no expense was spared on the sets and costumes. Lots of kinks have been worked out since 2010, and the American tour is getting positive reviews, in advance of a possible Broadway run. The original Phantom is the longest-running show in Broadway history so you’d expect this to be a no-brainer.
