Scottish director Lynne Ramsay’s latest film is a violent study of a single traumatized character, in this case a brutal vigilante named Joe (Joaquin Phoenix) that rescues kidnapped girls. That should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen Ramsay’s three previous films, most recently the high school shooting drama We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011). In this compact, bleak action tale, Joe’s called in to save the daughter of a New York senator, though things aren’t as simple as they seem. Though it’s under 90 minutes long, Little White Lies declares the film “a brutal masterclass in sensory overload.”
