There’s nothing new about Magic Circle, but the Boston metal band seems pretty happy that way. The melodic doom outfit released its first album in 2013, but the self-titled record could easily have been made in 1980, analog recording techniques and all. (Their record company certainly isn’t shy about pushing them as a metal nostalgia act.) Last year’s Journey Blind album was even stronger, and reviewers were quick to compare it to later Black Sabbath and earlier Saint Vitus. Whatever! It’s a really fun album, thanks especially to Brendan Ratigan’s spot-on vocals. Sire and V-Sect are also on the bill.
