A Facebook friend recently lamented the lack of local devised theatre – that is, the sorts of shows that are collectively written and sort of improvisational and not just people acting out lines that some guy wrote with a quill pen back in his mom’s basement four hundred years ago. This might be why I noted the “Manhattan Theatre Collective” was doing “Tales from the Barn: a Collection of Devised Theatre Stories” at Roger Williams University for one night only. A traveling group doing devised theatre for free on a Monday? Okay! Then I got to Googling, because I had no idea what the Manhattan Theatre Collective actually was, and the Roger Williams website was surprisingly scant on info. Now I’m reasonably convinced that it’s a student group – clever name, guys – and also The Barn is the name of the college’s allegedly haunted performing arts center. In other words, this will either be the low-key event of the year, or maybe an in-jokey undergrad improv thing.
