David McKain’s memoir Spellbound was released to great acclaim in 1988, with the UConn professor scoring a Pulitzer nomination for his gritty story about going up poor in a 1940s Pennsylvania oil town. The book was recently reissued, but the 77-year old author now suffers from Alzheimer’s and lives in a Rhode Island nursing home. McKain’s wife Margaret Gibson is a National Book Award nominated poet, and her recent collection Broken Cup looks deeply into her husband’s illness. Gibson will read poems from the collection, while poet Jim Scully will be reading excerpts from Spellbound.
