Margo Jefferson

April and the Extraordinary World

Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Margo Jefferson was raised in a world of white gloves, riding lessons and elaborate hair straightening rituals, common among the white upper crust but quite unusual for a black woman born in 1947. Jefferson’s mother was a socialite, her father the head of pediatrics at Chicago’s largest black hospital. A well-respected cultural critic – she wrote the surprisingly quote-free Beyoncé cover story for Vogue last September – Jefferson uses her atypical upbringing to study the upper classes of black America and also to seriously discuss issues of depression and suicide among black women.

This event takes place in the Martinos Auditorium on the ground floor of the Granoff Center.
