Though they both had commercial hits, Matthew Sweet and Tommy Keene are two old rockers that I associate pretty exclusively with college radio, specifically with this rock show called Citibeat which currently lives on the online-only WUMD station out of UMass Dartmouth. (Not to be a fuddy-duddy but online-only college radio is super annoying!) At the end of 1999, DJ Ed Slota ran a countdown of his 40 all-time favorite songs, one which included Sweet’s highly polished grunge-pop banger “Sick Of Myself.” I’d heard the song plenty of times – it’s a very chipper sad-sack anthem of the sort that was very popular in 1994. Though I mostly lost track of Sweet after Y2K he’s still quite active. His 17-track album (speaking of the nineties) Tomorrow Forever was released in June.
