“Exes is about time,” Max Winter notes in his Book Notes playlist at Largehearted Boy. “About how every time is many times all at once, and about how there is no such thing as a single point in it.” Set in gloomy Providence, Exes looks at a man belatedly attempting to make sense of his younger brother’s suicide. The book isn’t very long (although it took Winter fifteen years to write it), but its structure is quite complicated, with different narrators coming and going throughout its 212 pages.
