Miguel’s been sexually healing our ears since 2011 or so with his r&b hits – “Adorn” is still the biggest, but after five months of radio plays the more recent “Skywalker” clearly has some last power. Miguel’s also the go-to duet partner for romantic ballads, like those by Mariah Carey (“#Beautiful,” a great song) and Janelle Monae (“Primetime,” also excellent). The singer’s new album is politically timely – the video for boppy single “Told You So” features the singer in a desert with rockets launching, interspersed with footage from political rallies. (Side note: thanks to Vimeo’s autoplay feature I learned that director Karim Hu Doo also made this amazing H&M commercial.) In a so-so review, writer Daniel Bromfield says the crooner’s most recent album is “like having stoned sex while CNN is blaring”. That’s not a lie, though I’m still mad the album doesn’t include the fenetic single “Shockandawe.” That song is lots of fun, though it’s short and doesn’t really sound like much else on the radio these days. Sir and Nonchalant Savant open.
