Satoshi Kon’s Millennium Actress was released in 2003, with Slant calling it the “anime answer to Mulholland Drive.” The feature blurs lines between reality and cinema, as a reclusive actress is found some thirty years after an on-set accident pulled her away from the spotlight. Now, she recalls past loves, on screen and off, for a documentary filmmaker who is no impartial observer. This screening marks a new restoration of the film, which is being presented in Japanese with English subtitles. (A dubbed version screens on August 19.)
