Graphic rape and murder might make A Clockwork Orange seem like an odd choice for a summer evening out in the parking-lot-disguised-as-a-park. But Stanley Kubrick’s most enduring film is so visually over the top that it deserves to be seen on a big screen, flagrant nudity and all. Seductive, sinister Malcolm McDowell stars as Alex, a malevolent force whose free will is taken away by a perverse justice system. (The original novel was penned by the very Catholic Anthony Burgess.) McDowell was essentially reprising the role he’d played a few years earlier in Lindsey Anderson’s great film If…, only with higher stakes and more baroque art direction.
