Opening tonight, Head Trick Theatre’s outdoor production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing includes one significant casting twist: headstrong lovers Benedick and Beatrice are both being portrayed by female actors. More friends than paramours, the two are forced on one another by bored but well-meaning friends. (It’s Shakespeare so forty other mischievous things are happening in the background, but that’s the main gist.) A frothy romp that steers clear of sprites and enchantments, Head Trick artistic director Rebecca Maxfield describes the production as “a feminist approach to the original screwball comedy.”
