Providence artist Nafis M. White joins Brooklyn-based artist/historian Karen Bachmann for a conversation inspired by HairBrained, Providence Public Library’s spring exhibition. White’s work deals closely with black women’s hair, and her woven pieces relate to the very Victorian practice of hairwork, which involved weaving the hair of loved ones into jewelry and mementos. Bachmann, a Victorian hairwork collector with her own jewelry practice, sounds very fascinating all around. (As resident artist at Brooklyn’s departed Morbid Anatomy Museum, she once gave a talk entitled “Charred Remains: Spontaneous Human Combustion and You.”) PPL Programs & Exhibitions Director Christina Bevilacqua will moderate the conversation.
