35 years after it’s first release, Hayao Miyazaki’s classic Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind returns to theaters. Also, it returns to theaters every two years or so. Here’s what I had to say in 2017: “In a post-apocalyptic world, humans are imperiled by toxic spores, roaming sandworm things, and wars over scarce resources. A young heroine named Nausicaä must bring peace to a planet ravaged a thousand years ago by the excesses of mankind. The animated Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is an early effort from Japanese director Hiyao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke), and one of the earliest examples of climate-themed entertainment for young people.”
The film screens at 7pm at Showcase Cinemas (Providence Place/Warwick) and Regal Cinemas (Swansea/Bellingham/Stonington). This one’s in Japanese with English subtitles; a dubbed version screens on Monday.
