One of the summer’s more unexpected offerings is Neon Retrofest, a new convention dedicated to retrofuturism. Basically, and I’m really distilling here, it’s a pop culture event centered around the sci-fi visions of the future that people had in the eighties and early nineties. So, like, Robocop aesthetics? This sounds like such a specific niche that I can hardly believe that this an actual convention whose website predicts an audience of 4500, but that’s also probably true about most conventions. Nearly two dozen musicians with names like Dreddd and Neuron Spectre are coming from as far away as Serbia to perform. There’s also film screenings, with movies both memorable (Liquid Sky) and less so (Yor, The Hunter from the Future). Also a retro arcade, panels, and so on.
Tickets for Friday are $35; weekend passes are $85.
