Never Silent Voices: Those Who Spoke for Freedom

juneteenth celebration 2019

Though it’s been celebrated since 1865, a lot of white people outside of Texas didn’t know what Juneteenth was until last year, when Apple added it to its Calendar, or maybe 2017 when there was an episode of Black-ish about it. Two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, and two months after the surrender of Robert E. Lee, slaves in Texas were finally freed on June 19, 1865, when news from the north finally trickled down to the Gulf Coast. (Read more here.) Locally, Mixed Magic Theatre is marking the occasion with Never Silent Voices: Those Who Spoke for Freedom, which features stories, narratives, songs and speeches, plus an exhibit of art and award winning quilts.
