Now in its tenth year, the eight-day Newport Dance Festival features nightly performances by Island Moving Company, performing together with this year’s visiting resident company Thomas/Ortiz Dance of New Canaan, Connecticut, known for (I’m quoting here) “melding Ted Thomas’s urban athleticism with Francis Ortiz’s Latin sensuality.” Each show begins with an Etude, a short piece that was choreographed that same day. Each performance also features one or more other companies who are visiting from New York, Dallas, and Italy. (On Monday it’s Caitlin Trainor, a company from New York.) Formerly known at the Great Friends Dance Festival, this year it moves to the lawn of St. Michael’s Country Day School. Bring your own blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics.
Live music begins at 6pm, a “talk-forward” with the choreographer happens at 6:45pm, and then the show proper begins at 7pm.
