Amy Adams does her best Julianne Moore in Nocturnal Animals, playing a wealthy but sexually frustrated California lady with nice red hair. Jake Gyllenhaal is her first husband in a series of flashbacks, while the duo also play the characters in his debut novel, which he’s dedicated to her nearly two decades after their split. There’s lots of bouncing around and unnecessary doubling. It’s surprisingly very Catholic and more surprisingly it’s a western, set largely in a remote part of west Texas where nobody has any cell reception. Michael Shannon really steals the show as a slow-talking cop trying to solve a grim double murder. Jena Malone has a quick cameo but her Comme des Garcons getup deserves its own honorary Oscar.
