Boston Lyric Opera just wrapped up its season opener, a carnivalesque Pagliacci that’s been widely acclaimed for its jaunty immersiveness. That might be a tough act to follow for Salt Marsh Opera, which is doing its own Pagliacci in Westerly this weekend. Not that I’m complaining! While Salt Marsh Opera is based in Connecticut, their occasional jaunts across state lines mark the only time we get to see live opera at all in Rhode Island. Written by Ruggiero Leoncavallo [pictured], Pagliacci is a comedic tragedy based on a true case about adultery among a troupe of fiery Italian actors. Tenor Benjamin Werley plays Canio, the heartbroken clown whose wife loves someone else.
