Philip Hoare, whale enthusiast

British writer Philip Hoare likes whales. He’s written several books about them and also co-organized the Moby Dick Big Read, in which the 136 chapters of Melville’s epic were read in turn by John Waters, Tilda Swinton, Tony Kushner, Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant, and 132 other people. Mythical-seeming creatures whose stinking bodies literally fueled the world for nearly a century, whales have had a long and enduring impact on human history, one which Hoare will shed some light on in a talk entitled “Of the Less Erroneous Pictures of Whales: The Whale in myth, in industry, in futurity.”
