Pierre Huyghe: Human Mask

Pierre Huyghe, Human Mask

There’s something so profoundly strange about Human Mask, the 19-minute video by artist Pierre Huyghe, that any synopsis will fail to explain its aura. The wide, hushed film opens with drone footage of Fukushima’s dead zone shortly after the 2011 nuclear eruption, then turns into something much weirder: a little girl in a creepy mask and some sort of furry costume, just sort of hanging out in an empty restaurant. No, that’s not right: soon you realize the girl is actually a snow monkey, and the black hair she plays with is actually a wig. It’s deeply unsettling, and not just because of the post-apocalyptic framework.
