Any exhibit featuring twenty-one local artists is bound to blend interesting work with awful nonsense, and URI’s bluntly titled Race Matters! exhibit is no exception. On the plus side, Munir Mohammed’s oil paintings and Bob Dilworth’s intriguing mixed media pieces elevate the show beyond the very literal. Still, every exhibit at URI Providence is hindered almost irreparably by the space. I understand that the state is broke and everything, but this gallery is completely unacceptable. Disconnected hallways with art mounted to fuzzy cubicle-style walls and pieces accompanied by 8.5” X 11” printouts. So disappointing.
