Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project

Thanks to everyone who submitted suggestions for Black History Month. One that really jumped out was Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project, running for the next two weeks at Acoustic Java. Matt Wolf’s documentary is only screening at a handful of theaters nationwide, and it provides a look into the life of a reclusive Philadelphia news obsessive who recorded TV 24 hours a day, from the Iran Hostage Crisis in 1979 through the Sandy Hook shootings in 2012. When the former librarian and TV host died that December, she left behind some 70,000 VHS (and Beta!) cassettes including TV news footage that might have been lost forever. Film site Little White Lies calls it an “urgent, intimate tribute to an unsung modern folk hero.”
