Lucas Hnath’s 2012 play Red Speedo requires a swimming pool, which explains the odd location for Epic Theatre Company’s latest. Gunnar Manchester excels as Ray, a dopey but manipulative swimmer on the eve of the Olympic qualifiers. Manchester deserves a lot of credit for pulling off a wholly unappealing role without condescending to the character. Christopher Crider-Plonka is Peter, Ray’s smarter but no less manipulative brother/manager, and the two play off one another well as they negotiate a modeling deal with Speedo. The rapid-fire back and forth could have been sped up a bit, but this is still probably the best show I’ve seen Epic do. (Pro tip: wear a sweater and then plan to sit on it. The pool gets pretty humid and those bleachers are brutal. I spent half the show with my knees in some poor stranger’s back.)
