RISD will soon project 214 master’s recipients into the world, and for one last hurrah they’re mounting a big annual exhibition featuring work from graduating students in all 16 grad departments. While the artists change from year to year, a few themes seem to be constant: big showy sculptures; video projects about imperialism and/or plastics in the ocean; conceptual pedagogical projects that are really awkward to read in a 28,000 square foot convention hall. Some artists will nervously hover over their work and the ones you want to meet will be nowhere to be seen. The art itself is always a crapshoot, but it’s always fun to select two or three favorites and watch where their careers take them. Expect a long bar line.
