Disparate characters literally crash into one another in Robert Altman’s Nashville, a prickly country musical released on the eve of the American bicentennial. The massive freeway pileup is over as soon as it happens, though; no one’s killed or injured or even really late for wherever they’re going, despite the melodramatic ravings of a peculiar self-described BBC reporter. Three hours long, the film follows various musicians – country, but also rock and gospel – as well as groupies and hangers-on. It’s epic; I wrote 1700 words about it once, if you’re interested.
