Sarah Bates Washburn

Sarah Bates Washburn at Rhode Island College

Two weeks into the new administration and we’ve already got an angry, satirical show aimed squarely at the president. Viewers are required to walk on a not-quite-American flag to enter the gallery space. That trick’s been done before, but Massachusetts artist Sarah Bates Washburn sent her design to India for manufacture, and the silk rug is actually a mix of Chinese and Russian flags. Washburn’s blunt, poppy show is called Make America _____ Again, and other highlights include an American flag embroidered with the words POLITICAL PRISONER in rainbow letters, as well as three mylar balloons that would spell out the word EGO (except that the E’s deflated and laying sadly on the ground).
