There’s a ton of buzz surrounding Marilou is everywhere, the just-released debut novel from Sarah Elaine Smith. Set in Appalachian Pennsylvania, the book is about a fourteen-year old girl who slowly assumed the identity of another girl in town, an older teenager who’s gone missing under mysterious circumstances. NPR calls it “a novel of stunning emotional intelligence” and “one of the strongest debut novels to come along in years.” Smith reads as part of Out of State Plates, a new reading series organized by Sarah Frye at Twenty Stories’ new location in Fox Point. The reading will be followed by an in-depth conversation about the craft of writing: character, plot, revision, and the publishing process.
