First released in 1981, Alvin Schwartz’s horror anthology Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark compiled a bunch of very short, gruesome folktales and paired them with some genuinely terrifying artwork by Stephen Gambell. For the movie adaptation, some of the creatures were based on Gambell’s illustrations and built with prosthetics, leading to what are apparently great visuals for a PG-13 horror movie aimed at tweens. Set in small-town Pennsylvania during Nixon’s 1968 election campaign, the film was directed by Norwegian horror veteran André Øvredal (Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe).
