I haven’t had a chance yet to see Sorry To Bother You, Boots Riley’s dystopian satire about a black Oakland telemarketer (Lakeith Stanfield) who rises through the corporate ranks by speaking with the voice of a white man (David Cross). The film is apparently very twisty, very violent, and very funny, according to reviewers, each of whom is really eager to talk about how this is the perfect anti-capitalist movie for this exact political moment. (My Twitter feed is 100% gaga over it.) It’s being glowingly compared to Bamboozled, Repo Man, Brazil, O Lucky Man – Lindsay Anderson’s 1973 satire is directly referenced, I guess – and, uh, Office Space.
Sorry To Bother You is currently playing at Showcase Cinemas (Providence Place/Warwick only) and Cinemaworld Lincoln
