I spent a chunk of the year-end break catching up on movies. I saw good ones (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), pretty good ones (The Favourite), and really crappy ones (Aquaman), but the unexpected winner by far was Marvel’s animated Spider-Man adventure. I’m a little ambivalent about whether multi-gendered, multi-ethnic Spider-Men are actually something to celebrate – the Disney-owned brand is mainly trying to maximize profits, after all – but I totally fell for the story of a New York teen who’s bitten by a radioactive spider and the shift in the space-time fabric that allows a bunch of other Spider-Men (and women, and a pig) to appear out of nowhere. I feel odd saying Post Malone is getting robbed of an Oscar nomination, but his “Sunflowers” song is used to great effect here.
