A feel-good Sundance winner about three high school step performers, documentary Step was filmed in Baltimore during the 2015-16 school year, the shooting of Freddie Gray still fresh in everyone’s minds. For the uninitiated, step is an athletic sort of percussive dance/cheerleading hybrid that evolved around black sororities and fraternities. Captain Blessin and teammates Cori and Kayla are seniors at the Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women, a charter school founded by director Amanda Lipitz’s mother, and each wants to be the first in her family to attend college.
