The Strike Was Broken

Shaun Slifer at 159 Sutton

Using a fairly straightforward process, Pittsburgh-based artist Shaun Slifer dons a high-visibility fluorescent vest (“that gives the suggestion of a municipal worker”) and uses Tyvek and crayon to make wax relief rubbings of historical markers. He leaves most of the text blank, highlighting only those words that interrupt the dominant narrative about what happened at the site. On his website, Slifer says he’s “focused especially on plaques that feature language which could divert our understandings of colonialism, genocide, state oppression, and military violence and which create truncated or misleading accounts that marginalize popular revolts and disregard whole communities.”

A number of the marker rubbings are on display through September 27 at 159 Sutton, and can be seen by appointment or on Tuesdays, when the space doubles as a CSA pickup spot.
