The week’s most intriguing new release is a three-hour Tamil epic called Super Deluxe. With a large cast and a lot of overlapping plotlines—it’s being compared to Pulp Fiction and Magnolia—it’s pretty racy for a movie from conservative India. In bustling Chennai, teenaged boys discover something appallingly familiar about an adult film performer, while a married couple try to dispose of a dead body and a transgender parent* attempts to reunite with their child. The trailer is nuts, as is the “song” that was released in advance of the movie. “This is not a film to devour,” says the Deccan Herald, “but one to regurgitate.”
* Indian cinema isn’t exactly known for its progressive values, but reviewers have noted that the character is portrayed sympathetically, though there are some violent scenes.
