How much do you know about seaweed? A nuisance when you’re swimming, a generally tasty salad ingredient. Actually, these oxygen-supplying ocean flora are super important. (Fun fact: seaweed doesn’t have roots so technically it’s not even a weed; it’s algae.) Maine author Susan Hand Shetterly lives where seaweed harvesting has become big business. Who knew – I didn’t – that processed seaweed products can be found in everything from toothpaste to makeup to dog food? Her new book is called Seaweed Chronicles, and The Washington Post couldn’t rave enough about it, calling it “a beautiful book, both educational and inspirational.”
The event is free, but a portion of book sales will be donated to the Westerly Land Trust.
