There are two reggae shows happening in Rhode Island tonight. Sizzla performs at Lupo’s: he’s a super talented performer with an unfortunate tendency towards violent homophobia, so much so that in 2008 his lyrics got him banned from performing in 29 European countries. Meanwhile, American-born Tarrus Riley is appearing at the Ocean Mist. Riley’s roots style is a little corny, honestly, but the gentle singer’s pretty well known for being a little more humane in his positioning. (He’s best absorbed in mid-sized doses: his back and forth with English R&B singer Estelle is great, for instance, on the just-released single “Love Like Ours”. His voice also constracted nicely with wispy Ellie Goulding on Major Lazer’s “Powerful.”) Mighty Mystic opens.
