The Art of Protest

There’s a fair amount of one-dimensional anger in The Art of Protest, an all-encompassing group show that tackles subjects randing from homophobia and polluted waterways to the president and, uh, the president. (There’s a lot about the president, including a gold leafed turd fossil.) But the show’s real standouts are its least confrontational pieces: Sally Schluter Tardella’s foldout book, for instance, mixes military aircraft with pigeons. Linda Behar’s Peace Labyrinth [pictured] is a large, solemn diptych with untranslated texts cut out of wall-mounted paper: she collaborated with Iranian artist Raheleh T. Filsoofi to show similarities between the Hebrew story of Esther and the Persian Declaration of King Cyrus. It’s quite beautiful and very effective.
