After winning ten Tony awards (including Best Musical), Broadway sensation The Band’s Visit begins its national tour in Providence, a fact that I worry might be lost amidst all the Hamilton buzz. Based on a feel-good 2007 Israeli film, it tells the story of an Egyptian police band lost in a peaceful, sleepy Israeli desert town. Generous, bored café owner Dina (Chilina Kennedy) sings about her childhood love of Egyptian entertainers Omar Sharif and Uum Kulthum. Friendships are made, commonalities are found, and songs are sung and performed on clarinet, cello, oud, and darbuka. Egyptian bandleader Tewfik will be played by Israeli actor Sasson Gabai, who originated the role in the 2007 film and reprised it on Broadway last year.
