The nefarious Mr. Mister and his shadowy Liberty Committee gradually win over the influencers of Steeltown in The Cradle Will Rock, a musical about one rust belt town and the political machinations of one sinister industrialist. Though the bad guy is politically relevant, Head Trick Theatre’s production focuses mainly on the ensemble of spunky townspeople. (I expected the villain to be a little more villainous, honestly.) It’s a relatively tame play by today’s theatrical standards, but the dozen or so actors spin through the jazzy 1930s piano score while periodically sitting among the audience at cafe tables, an homage to the show’s controversial 1937 premiere.
