The Day the Earth Stood Still

The Day the Earth Stood Still

One of cinema’s greatest pleas for nuclear disarmament, The Day the Earth Stood Still is a peculiar oddity: a B-movie alien invasion thriller with a big budget and pedigreed director. (Robert Wise had worked on Citizen Kane and would later win two Oscars for West Side Story and The Sound of Music.) It’s earnest, sure, and maybe a little hokey when the young boy brings the alien to visit the Lincoln Memorial, but it’s also a fascinating curio of Cold War paranoia. The film won a Golden Globe for Promoting International Understanding, a category that existed for about two decades after World War II.
